We’ll talk about the most commonly used ones, which ones we kept, and how I solved the problem of carrying all of it around, in this segment that I’d like to call… “Carry on, carry on"

"Buy once, cry once” - Ning Wong

If you’re a photographer listening to this podcast, this is exactly why videographers need a little bit more time to follow you around when you’d decide to be creative and do an impromtu shoot with the couple. If you’re a new videographer, you better be pumping iron because getting that perfect lighting setup or the steady camera movement involves moving around at least 30lbs of crap. So the next time you decide to do an impromptu photoshoot in the dark… you need to wait. Too aggressive? With that in mind, here are the common video equipment:

Monopod - this will be your best friend. Perfect for maneuvering in tight spaces and helps you become pretty much invisible

Tripod - the staple in all of wedding videography. Getting a really good tripod will definitely help you in having smoother footage

Lights - we use 2 kinds of lights in every shoot, which I’ll discuss in another episode but you’ll need these for sure. Just like when Lady Galadriel gives Frodo a phial of starlight, she said “a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out”

Light Stands - need. You can have your lights just running around the reception area. Actually, we’ve put led lights on our cameras before and every single one, whether is was expensive or not, always popped out to the tiniest camera movement. Plus it looks horrendous whenever you get in the photographers shot and you have that thing on there.

Mic Stand - ah, the savior! We use mic stands for toasts! Why? So that the speaker won’t move around like a freakin maniac when doing their speech!

Gimbal - it comes in different types and the smaller you go the better.

Drone - I’m so happy that drones are smaller now! I remember years ago, drones literally looked like super villains or at least the tiny henchmen. Now, it’s all about portability and it’s amazing!

Slider - If your camera has not image stabilization and you insist in doing everything handheld, you at least need to have this because you’ll never know when you’ll need to do steady shots for establishing and details.

Sand bags - Use Sand Bags because you won’t believe how many people trip on light stands that are tucked away in safety. Face palm. There should be like a sound that corresponds to face palm. Like Krusty the clowns groan...

Now, I’ve been seeing more and more women getting into videography and I know that this next part will help you in carrying extra gear. Not that I’m saying you can’t carry it or anything but whenever I see my guys grab a bag and go “arrrrghhuhhhh” I know it’s a pain. So these are my problem solvers! There you have it! I know this might be the most extreme case of pack ratting you’ve ever heard but this is the value I bring to the client. I hate it when they ask questions and the only answer we can give is… "yeah, my bad.” So now thinking of being a wedding videographer you should know that it includes this part. There are no film crews around here my friend. It’s just you and and two more people if you’re lucky. If you’re not lucky, you’ll be carrying all of this by yourself. Always make sure that you pack smart.

Engaging the wedding party

Let's talk about why you need to engage the wedding party, the typical poses and how we do it for out videos!

Welcome to the Wedding Video Boss Podcast! Where we talk about the business of being a wedding creative and also a peek into my world as a wedding videographer. I am your host, Paul Santiago.

Today we are going to talk about a key skill in covering a wedding: ENGAGING THE WEDDING PARTY.

As professionals who capture life through movement and sound, it’s our job to preserve those moments that make up the couple’s wedding day. Your gear may be top-of-the-line, but if you’re completely disconnected and reluctant to connect with the people at the wedding, your video is gonna fall flat.

Author and life coach, Rasheed Ogunlaru advises to, “Be genuinely interested in everyone you meet and everyone you meet will be genuinely interested in you.”

Because you’re meeting and interacting with people, at an event that’s important to them, you need to have that openness and genuine warmth to put them at ease.

Shannon L. Adler, inspirational author, says “You don’t have to say every thing to be a light. Sometimes a fire built on a hill will bring interested people to your campfire.”

And so in this episode, we are going to talk about why it’s important to pose the bridal party, what the usual bridal party poses are for video, and how WE do it for ours. All these coming up in a segment that I should've called… Yeah, just um just do what you were doing...

We'll talk about

  1. 3 reasons why you need to learn how to engage the bridal party
  2. Typical poses
  3. How WE pose bridal party for video

Tip: If you’re directing the bridal party, please be conscious of your choice of words so none of them will feel insulted or left out.

So that’s how we do it! We want to make sure everything’s candid and we’re engaging the bridal party. We capture emotions and those fleeting, but equally sweet moments, and condense it into a masterpiece that is the couple’s wedding video.

LEARNING TO POSE GROUPS, WILL DEFINITELY HELP YOUR VIDEOS COME TO LIFE! YOU, my friend, must learn to establish rapport and harmony among them, and between them and yourself. You’re filming a wedding after all, not a funeral.

More importantly, there’s a reason why these couples chose their bridesmaids, groomsmen, and the bridal party. YOUR JOB IS TO SHOW THEIR CHEMISTRY. Your job is to show why this group is unique from other groups.

Asking them to do these poses, I know is very “cookie-cutter” to do. But every single group has a different reaction and that’s what makes them unique and your goal is to show their chemistry on-site and capture those moments on video….and show that they are a very unique bunch of people.

You’ll notice that as you film, the bridal party is gradually going to become comfortable with you. At the start, they will act formal and stiff towards you, but as the day progresses, they will become comfortable with having you around and they’re gonna smile and wave every time they see you.

So that’s your goal: DEVELOP A CHEMISTRY WITH THE BRIDAL PARTY AND WITH EVERYONE IN THE WEDDING. At the same time, YOU HAVE TO SHOW THEIR CHEMISTRY WITH EACH OTHER, because there’s just gonna be no point in being part of the bridal party if there’s no chemistry.

There are situations like that, though! We’ve encountered bridal parties who were total strangers to each other, but were related to the couple--one is a cousin of the bride, another is a close friend from college and both of them are part of the bridal party.

When you help strangers release some of that awkwardness and tension, they end up having a fun time together! When the newly-married couple sees them having fun, they can focus on relaxing at the reception. If you were able to bring out the chemistry between these people, you’ve succeeded, my friend! You pretty much broke the ice! Kudos to you and I give you a huge clap on the back!

He is the founder of WedFormz.com, a database of downloadable contract templates for wedding and event businesses. Audience questions:

  • What is the legal thing to do once someone backs out of a their booking after signing a contract and paying a deposit, are they entitled to a full refund of the deposit? How do you deal with clients who sign your contract, in which they agree to have their footage released publicly (i.e. in the form of a trailer, for marketing purposes), but then suddenly change their minds after the wedding day? Specifically, I'm thinking of clients who ask you to remove footage from all areas of your online presence, like your website, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

  • My other question is about clients who let you know before signing the contract that they want to keep the content private. Do you charge them extra for that?

  • I’m booking clients for any where between $500-$1200. I don’t currently carry insurance, I ask for a non-refundable “deposit” instead of a “retainer,” and I have yet to run into an unruly client, or someone who is unhappy with my work. What steps should I take to make a bullet proof contract that isn’t so wordy that it scares away my clients? Can making your client sign a limited liability agreement up to the amount paid, actually protect the vendor from someone else at the wedding suing for say, an accident with camera gear? (tripod fell on foot for example).

  • The client has already paid the full amount up front. Your contract says you will deliver the final video in 3 weeks, but you deliver it late on the 4th week. Do you owe them some money? Could they sue you for a full refund? What is a fair way to go about it for both parties?

What’s the difference between a deposit and down payment. Which has to be refunded and if it is a nonrefundable deposit vs a security deposit does it have to be refunded?

There you have it! I hope we answered your questions and made everything clearer. Contracts can be a pain, just make sure you communicate the terms and conditions properly. Managing your client’s expectations allows you to provide them with good service and turn them into raving fans.

Attracting your ideal market

Finding your dream clients will be long and hard. Take these steps and, at least, you’ll be headed to the right direction.

Welcome to the Wedding Bossness Podcast! I am your host, Paul Santiago. We’re at episode 11 and in this episode, we are going to talk about the key steps to attracting your ideal clients! I loved Megan’s interview so much that I needed to follow it up!

As people, we naturally gravitate towards others who share our values, who can listen, and who understand our needs. When it comes to telling the unique stories of weddings, creating meaningful connections through genuine service, is what’s going to make clients choose you and even bring others along with them.

Some of the most renowned people in the world, believe in this:

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, likens attracting clients to an intimate event. He said, "We see our customers as invited guests to a party, and we are the hosts. It's our job to make the customer experience a little bit better."

When your clients or guests join the party, we make sure to listen: David Beebe, a producer for branded content said, “We need to stop interrupting what people are interested in and be what people are interested in.”

Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, advises to "Get closer than ever to your customers. So close that you tell them what they need, well before they realize it themselves."

From the moment the client casts their first glance your way, to the time when the wedding reception is finished, we as vendors, must maintain a good relationship.

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” said Maya Angelou, the renowned poet.

“Decide the effect you want to produce in your reader, ” said author Robert Collier, or in our case, our clients.

To keep attracting the ideal client, we gotta replicate this process!

“Build something 100 people love, not something 1 million people kind of like.” – Brian Chesky, co-founder of Airbnb, said.

“A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well.” Jeff Bezos, also said.

So, to attract your ideal clients and to effectively scale your business, crafting a clear marketing message and establishing a strong presence are the keys. How can you make sure your ideal client looks in your direction and make their way to you? There are 3 steps that we followed, in this segment I should’ve called… Plan of attract...

STEP NUMBER 1: ESTABLISH YOUR BRAND.

STEP NUMBER 2: ESTABLISH YOUR CUSTOMER PROFILE.

STEP NUMBER 3: MATCH TO YOUR MARKET

The more you give your brand importance, the higher your avatars are gonna be, which is your customer profile. The client experience is going to depend on your brand, and your brand is going to dictate how much money you’re going to earn in a year! Those steps, my friends, is the best plan of attract! Bottom line is find the camera that fits your style and master it. There’s so many situations that can happen at weddings but as long as you know exposure and how to adjust your camera to each situation, the camera won’t matter. Some of the best photographers and videographers, still use “old” cameras and they’re still changing the game!

If you’re a beginner, rent equipment first before you buy. You won’t do enough weddings on your first year anyway so just incorporate the rental to your cost. If you’re a photographer looking to expand into video, you have two options, buy another camera that can take great photos and video or get a camera that’s good for video and strap it on you.

You are the brand. The brand that will guide your clients to the success. Look around that’s exactly what your favorite brands do to you!
