Pricing strategies and a demo for computing cost

The best part of getting into business is making money, let me show you the ways!

Welcome to the Wedding Bossness Podcast, I am your host, Paul Santiago. We’re at Episode 8 and I want to talk a little bit more about pricing so let’s tackle the different pricing strategies, the cost factors that you should consider, and a live breakdown of how to compute for the price. So let’s start with a quote:

"Pricing is actually pretty simple...Customers will not pay literally a penny more than the true value of the product."

  • Ron Johnson

Pricing is the one thing that creatives never want to talk about. Probably it’s because we create art and art is priceless OR "like you know, I’m just doing this for fun bro”.

That’s right! Having a business should be fun!

There are different types of pricing strategies but I have summed it up to the three most useful:

  1. Price based on cost
  2. Price based on market
  3. Price based on perceived value

Cost factors:

Labor - Post Production - Overhead

Value Factors:

  1. Experience
  2. Quality
  3. Customer Service

Cost breakdown:

---EXAMPLE---

  • Lead shooter
  • Second shooter
  • Highlights
  • Music
  • Software
  • Business Insurance
  • Incidentals
  • TAX

Things to note:

  1. If someone books your top package, it means it’s time to raise your prices.
  2. Your price is your brand - be aware of that
  3. Demand will be the gauge for raising prices

Bottom line is, your business needs to be sustainable and pricing correctly is the key. Don’t forget though, using these pricing strategies will help you earn money but the quality of your product is what gets your business.

"Price is what you pay. Value is what you get." - Warren Buffett

Why businesses fail and pricing mistakes with Jeremy Chou

It's MasterClass Monday with Jeremy Chou and he's talking about why businesses fail and the common pricing mistakes that people are doing.

Welcome to the wedding bossness podcast, I am your host, Paul Santiago and today is… you guessed it right… today is Masterclass Monday! Which means you need to bring out your notepad, pen, tablet, your quill or whatever you use to takes notes because you’re not going to want to miss this one. I think today’s instructor is almost ready so let me give you a head start to grab that coffee or any warm beverage and let’s start the class!

Jeremy Chou is an international wedding photographer based out of Southern California. In the past 10 years, he has established himself as one of the most sought after wedding photographers in the industry. His work has been seen throughout all major US wedding blogs & select wedding publications. In addition to weddings, he also holds regular workshops throughout US and other international destinations for up & coming wedding photographers. So friends, help me in welcoming, Jeremy Chou!

Blog article: http://jeremychouworkshops.com/business/top-5-reasons-why-wedding-photographers-fail-2/#more-2194

Top 5 reasons why wedding photographer’s business fail:

  1. Lack of technical skills
  2. Not pricing yourself as a sustainable business.
  3. Fear of failure
  4. Inconsistency in your work
  5. Not understanding your ideal client base.

Blog article from Mastin Labs: https://www.mastinlabs.com/photoism/articles/top-5-tips-pricing-wedding-photographer

TOP 5 MOST COMMON PRICING MISTAKES FOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS

Pricing. The mere mentioning of the word could send some photographers shivering in the corner. It’s definitely one of the most important factors in running a successful AND sustainable business. Price yourself too high before you are ready, you risk losing all of your clients & referral base. Price yourself too low, you risk booking too many clients & burning out before you even have a chance to grow. In my years of speaking with other photographers, pricing continues to dominate the conversation when it comes to the business side of things. While there’s no right or wrong pricing point to set for your services, there are definitely obstacles one has to overcome in order to have a sustainable business. When a photographer starts his/her business, the very first decision you have to make is ‘how much should I charge’. While seemingly simple, it’s a fairly complex decision-making process. There are quite a few schools of thoughts on the proper way to price photography services, however, the basic concepts are essentially the same: figure out how much it takes to run the business (insurance, equipment costs, marketing costs, etc.) and then how much you want to make as profit. Divide that sum up with how many sessions you want to shoot. That will give a rough average on how much each session should be priced. It might seem common sense, but the fact is many photographers who are starting out will not be able to command a price point high enough to maintain a profitable business. However, even if you are a photographer who isn’t able to quite yet command a higher price point, I truly believe we all should understand the following 5 common mistakes when it comes to pricing.

Top 5 most common pricing mistakes for photographers

  1. Not knowing your business model.
  2. Your work simply won’t allow you to command a higher price point due to lack of consistency.
  3. Being in the pricing ‘dead zone’.
  4. Overly complicated price guide.
  5. No incentive for clients to book a higher package.

Simply put, pricing can make or break a photographer’s business. Many times we will have to field test different strategies in order to find out what works the best for our intended market. I hope these five most common mistakes most photographers make will help others on the right path!

So there you have it! Since you already know why businesses fail, make sure your fail smart and price yourself properly because, we’re a small business so we kinda need to make money. This is the first Masterclass Monday and I would love to know what you think, so feel free to reach out so I can bring in the right people to help you in building your business!

I hope this episode was helpful, also if you have any questions or suggestions, just feel free to reach out! Branding was a big part of our 'significance in the wedding industry' and that includes website and SEO improvements. Shoutout to Cloud and Web Services for revamping our Boffo Video website and helping us reach so much more people! Podcast, I am your host, Paul Santiago. It’s episode 6 and we’re talking about the the most commonly used lenses, the best versions (like brands that sell it) and I will reveal the lenses that I love to use! Before the music comes in, here's a quote to put things into perspective...

"I see everything through a spiritual lens.” - Katy Perry

Wait that’s not right… oh here it is…

“Different eyes see different things” - From the song, Different strings by Rush

Your lenses are the eyes of the audience, and different kinds of lenses will show the viewer different things. There are different types of lenses: ultra wide angle (8mm-24mm), wide angle (24mm-35mm), standard (35-50mm), telephoto lenses (85mm to 300mm+++). A prime lens has a fixed focal length, and a zoom lens can go in and out to provide a wider range of focal lengths.

Prime lenses have better optics than zooms, they usually can have a wider aperture, which gives them better low-light performance. Although prime lenses can be cheaper, because it less moving parts. Zoom lenses offer more flexibility when you shoot. They say when you’re a beginner, it’s better if you start with zoom lenses and as your skill level progresses you can move to prime lenses. These lenses will offer different looks because of the way its made and the way the glass is positioned. So when you film someone with a 50mm and you film the same subject with a 70-200mm, let’s just say you’ll get either a great review or an email that says, “hey Paul, I was wondering if you have any shots other than the one’s where 90% of my wide face is in it?"

You can actually youtube focal length videos on how one subject looks through different lenses. Let me try to find one and post it on the show notes:

https://gfycat.com/cooperativepreciouslaughingthrush

Here are the most commonly used lenses and their corresponding situations:

  • 35mm f/1.4 - Prep, Establishing shot of pre ceremony, ceremony and reception, detail shots
  • 50mm f/1.8 - (Nifty-Fifty) Romantics, Dancing
  • 85mm f/1.4 - Prep, Detail shots, Dancing
  • 70-200mm f/2.8 - Back camera
  • 100mm f/2.8 - Macro shots

After researching, I just realized that the way I film weddings is totally different from the norm. I’m not bragging or anything but I kinda feel relieved because now I know that I can actually share something useful hahaha "You have to kind of be invisible... so you use a longer lens." David Bailey Okay so I film using zoom lenses more than primes. The main reason is that I don’t want to be in the way of a moment when it happens and reason number two is with a zoom lens, I can easily adjust my lens in a split second to grab a particular moment. Well, there’s also reason number three, which was originally number one, which is so that I can adjust if the photographer gets in the way. Now I communicate better with photographers BUT there are still a lot of photographers out there who have no idea what lens to use for a particular situation or have no clue that there’s a videographer filming with them and I’m pretty sure they’re saying the same thing about us videographers. So just be ready for each other and anticipate what lens they’re using. Now that I shared why we use zoom lenses, here’s what we use!

Sorry! You need to listen to it to see how I use the lenses :)

I have an amazon affiliate list of lenses listed down below! On a budget:

These are my lenses:

These are the newest ones:

There you go! I’ve listed down all the lenses that can help you tell your story better but also save you time and money. Things to note are, make sure that you know if the lens your buying is manual or automatic focus, also, make sure that it’s the one for your cameras sensor, meaning if it’s cropped or full frame. I would advise to rent equipment first before you buy so that you’ll know if it’s right fit for you.

Remember, the quality of your wedding film will depend on the lens that you use, but the way you tell the story is what counts. I hope this episode was helpful, also if you have any questions or suggestions, just feel free to reach out! Seek & employ: How to hire smart

Where to find potential shooters and how to pick the right one

This is Episode 5 - Seek and Employ: How to find the right people to work with you. We’ll discuss where to look and how to choose. These are all from my experience so it might be different from what workshops taught you. You’re not going to want to miss this topic because this topic gave me these amazing and more importantly, it can make or break your company. That went dark real quick huh? Anyway, before I begin, let’s do the quotes for the day:

"Hiring the right people takes time, the right questions and a healthy dose of curiosity. What do you think is the most important factor when building your team? For us, it’s personality.” — Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group

“People are not your most important asset. The right people are.” – Jim Collins, book author & teacher

“Hiring people is an art, not a science, and resumes can’t tell you whether someone will fit into a company’s culture.”

  • Howard Schulz, Chairman & CEO of Starbucks

That’s right kids, don’t think that you can do this by yourself, people are a vital element to your success. And it all starts with, how important they are to you. Let’s talk about where to look for the right people and how to choose the perfect fit

QUICK TIP: Do the math, know your market and know how big you want to get. There’s a big difference between doing 30 weddings a year from doing 100. Let’s talk about where to look:

  1. Friends
  2. Networking events/ Mixers
  3. Facebook wedding groups in your area

Where not to look... you just have to listen ;)

On hiring, always remember PECMI!

  1. Position you’re hiring for
  2. EQ and if it fits the company culture
  3. Coach-ability
  4. Mastery of the fundamentals
  5. Is he a team player?

Just take note, there’s no I in team, but there’s hire in hierarchy. Sorry, I didn’t know how to end this! HAAHHA Just hire smart! Wedding audio 101

Elevate your videos by knowing the opportunities to get great audio

Welcome to the Wedding Video Boss Podcast, I am your host, Paul Santiago. Today we’re talking about audio, its importance, whether you’re filming from your phone or using a dslr, what kind of microphones go where, how to deal with a nightmare DJ and in the end a simple sample audio setup for beginner videographers or any wedding vendors who want to get into the BTS game. This right here will change the game and you’ll thank me for it if you do it right. First...

Here’s a quote from the great Jimmy Iovine, he is an American record producer best known as the co-founder of Interscope Records and mega millionaire because with Dr. Dre founded Beats Electronics. The company was purchased by Apple Inc. for $3 billion in May 2014

"You're only as good as your weakest link in the ecosystem of sound, of audio.” Ain’t that the truth!

Audio is what turns amateur video to professional. So as a filmmaker, your job is not only to show the audience what you see, but also to reveal to them what they didn’t hear at all. That is the element of subtle surprise! I listed down the opportunities to grab useable, clutch audio that are common within the wedding dayu Let’s get into the beautiful world of wedding audio... Please bear in mind that it is very important to have a shotgun mic attached to your camera. On board audio mics for DLSR’s are terrible. Oh and also, I hate seeing audio go into the red on the meter so always remember, ABC - Always Be Checking the audio levels while you film, you’ll never know when someone or something will be giving a sudden “woohoo” or someone pops open a champagne bottle. I will list down the cables, mics and recorders in the show notes so you'll know what I’m talking about. Another disclaimer, I will be talking about people crying and how beautiful it is for us, we’re not anarchists, we’re just videographers who appreciate emotion and our job is to capture it.

  • Letter Reading
  • Father of the bride for first look
  • Groom for first look

In anything you do, when it comes to plugging in, always ask permission before you touch anything!

  • DJ system for ceremony with RCA, xlr or 1/4 cable
  • Plug Recorder behind the speakers with an xlr or 1/4 cable
  • Officiant for ceremony
  • Groom for ceremony
  • DJ system for reception with an xlr, 1/4 inch or rca cable
  • DJ Speakers for reception with xlr or 1/4 cable

Now that you're aware of these options it'll definitely make your job easier. That is, until you encounter a DJ that just doesn’t want to help you out. What do you do? Listen to this episode!

Now let’s go to the much awaited simple audio setup, remember when I said that audio is the difference between amateur and professional video? We use this recorder called SONY ICD-PX. It’s probably one of the really good, affordable recorders out there that already comes with a mic. Get this, it has a Built-in 4 GB flash memory - Up to 173 Hours of maximum recording time, Up to 32 hours of battery life for extended recording. It has Noise Cut for noise-free recordings. We probably use at least 2 of these at a wedding!

Just capture the audio and video and you can ask a video editor to SYNC it for you. Voila! Instant content and you save money! Here are the most commonly used Cables, Mics & Recorders-

Cables:

  1. RCA male to 3.5mm male - https://amzn.to/2GetM0y
  2. XLR female to 3.5mm male - https://amzn.to/2UtikT0
  3. 1/4 inch male to 3.5mm male - https://amzn.to/2GbrzmU
  4. XLR male to XLR female - https://amzn.to/2TlB0Ut
  5. 1/4 male to 1/4 male - https://amzn.to/2BcWFqL

Mics:

  1. Rode VideoMic GO - https://amzn.to/2CIQ3k0
  2. Rode VideoMic - https://amzn.to/2FV11pQ
  3. Rode VideoMicro - https://amzn.to/2sMjJbq

  3. Tascam DR-10L - https://amzn.to/2Mvcq0S
  4. Tascam DR40 - https://amzn.to/2S752xZ

The Secret Weapon: Sony ICD-PX - https://amzn.to/2MFfurd

For wedding videographers, You’ll never feel more at ease at any event than when you know that you have at least 3 audio sources plugged in. For wedding vendors, you’re welcome. Feel free to email me if you want to know more about the sony recorder and how to use it. I can give you ideas or different options for your audio needs. You can reach me right at the bottom of the show notes. Okay, Is there anything else I missed? I would love to hear how this episode was for you so feel free to reach out! I need friends!!! Dress for success

Dress how you want to be addressed!

Welcome to the Wedding Video Boss Podcast!

I am your host, Paul Santiago and today we’re talking about dressing up for success. This is one of my favorite topics! Before we go any deeper, let’s do the quotes for the day:

"You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.”

  • Edith Head (American costume designer who won a record eight Academy Awards for Best Costume Design,)

and

“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”

  • Rachel Zoe (American fashion designer, businesswoman, and writer)

Now, these quotes may take you into different directions so before you go running to Nordstrom or hot topic, let’s talk about the things you need to remember when you try to dress for success...

Growing up in the Philippines, we were a very middle class family and mom worked a at school which was mostly for rich kids. Of course being a child of a teacher, the school gave my mom a great deal for our tuition and we were able to attend school where she worked at. And you know, as a kid, I didn’t really see the difference between me and my friends not until I was older. You know how kids are, they dont care. But then in high school my classmates started wearing branded clothing, let’s just say that I was wearing off brand BUT my mom very stylish so we grew up with her dressing us up and pretty much have a decent taste, not as amazing as my mom, but we had the gist of it. And if there’s anything I’ve learned, dressing well is not that different from wearing expensive clothes. Heck, I knew my wife since we were 15 and she thought we were rich! Hahaha With that being said, here are the things to remember when you Dress for success:

  1. It makes a good first impression
  2. What you’re wearing dictates how people will address you
  3. It will change your mood
  4. It’s a step to overall self-improvement
  5. Dress like how much you charge

Bottom line is, you dress up because you’re working. We’re already a small business, you don’t need to tell people that you’re broke by looking like a hobo. Imagine being the owner of the company and your employees come to work all sloppy and demotivated. It’ll affect your mood and your brand. So always remember, From the great Roy T. Bennett, Make improvements, not excuses. Seek respect, not attention. I would love to hear how this episode was for you so feel free to reach out! Don’t forget to subscribe, leave a review and I’ll see you on the next Wedding Video Boss podcast. Till then, play nice if you can’t win, be nice especially if you’re good looking. Bossman out.

Before you buy a camera...

Ask yourself these 10 questions that helped me choose my camera!

Welcome to the Wedding Video Boss Podcast, I am your host, Paul Santiago and today we are going to talk about the important questions you need to ask yourself when it comes to choosing the right Camera for you!

“Money spent on good-quality gear is always money well spent.”

― Tahir Shah, In Search of King Solomon's Mines

“The less gear you use, the more you grow as a photographer. Although there are fewer options available, you'll find more creative ways to capture what you feel! In a way, all your technical options before turn into creative solutions that improve your photography even more.”

― Marius Vieth - Photographer, author

Finding the right camera is vital to what kind of story you have to tell. Here are 10 questions that I actually want to answer with you.

  1. Lens Options
  2. Dynamic Range?
  3. Low Light capabilities?
  4. Recording Format?
  5. Camera’s Longevity?
  6. What Type of Cards Does It Take?
  7. Is It Practical for My Shooting Situations?
  8. What Is the Audio Situation?
  9. Can It Output Footage?
  10. What Is the Crop Factor?

Most commonly used cameras for wedding videography

  1. Panasonic gh5 - https://amzn.to/2MlEVOq
  2. Sony A7R III - https://amzn.to/2RUMd0M
  3. Canon 5D Mark 4 - https://amzn.to/2WaIj2S
  4. Canon C100 Mark 2 - https://amzn.to/2FOwUQE

If you’re just starting out, you don't have to go all out. Test out the waters first. The price of the camera doesn't guarantee great footage. Make sure to put this in mind: resale value, store locations, and service proximity & service quality. Don’t forget to subscribe, thank you so much for listening and stay tuned for the next episode of the Wedding Video Boss.

The key to discovering your shooting style

Finding your style needs to be a process, and here's what I did.

What’s up friends!

Welcome to the Wedding Video Boss Podcast, I am your host, Paul Santiago and I hope you are having an awesome day so far! If you’re not and you’re feeling lost, then I have a quote for you:

"If you cant describe what you are doing as a process, you don't know what you’re doing" -W Edwards Deming

I’ve always believed that you find yourself by how you deal with failure. What it doesn’t say is that you can actually fail smart, and when it comes to a career, not everyone is experiencing the same stage of failure. So I came up with the 3 steps to help you become more effective in your wedding video career.

  1. Find a good mentor
  2. Work for someone else
  3. Go out there and fail smart!

Here’s a quote from DUSTIN GRINNELL:

So if you’re a Master, are you one for life? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Once you’ve reached mastery, you’ve got to keep practicing to stay sharp. Without regular practice, the slip from Master to Journeyman is all too easy. Teachers would be wise to prevent slippage by providing refreshers. Fundamentally, it’s important to remember that we all learn by doing. If you succeed, share it. If you fail, fail smart. If you encounter a wall, smash it! Don’t forget to subscribe, thank you so much for listening and stay tuned for the next episode of the Wedding Video Boss.

The Intro

A tall, brown and handsome guy podcasting?! That's absurd!

Welcome to the wedding video boss podcast where we will focus on the business side of wedding videography as well as, how I established my company looking like this.

A tall, handsome and brown gentleman.

This is why the word BOSS has a loose translation which means the business of smashing stereotypes because let’s face it, I’m no Leo Di Caprio, I’m more of like a Chow Yun Fat, Ken Watanabe kind of chameleon ;)

Which, by the way, they should have a best named businesses awards because I’m just killing it with these!

I am your host, Paul Santiago, owner of Boffo Video, a wedding videography company in Southern California. We just hit our 8th year in the business and we average about 75 weddings a year. We have grown our team to 12 shooters and editors and we’ve been featured in numerous major and minor blogs and one TV shoutout! I have been honored to speak on stage for Canon at WPPI demoing new cinema lenses and Wedding MBA in Las Vegas talking about "Getting featured".

Having done more than 500 weddings, we’ve pretty much seen every possible thing that can happen. I’m so proud to say that our portfolio is filled with different ethnicities, ceremonies, cultures, and different types of drunk people.

Since you’re already listening to this podcast, I know that you are passionate about your craft. So now, let’s talk about making money!

This podcast is by no means a propaganda against people who aren’t brown, it’s just geared to celebrate the successes of others who are almost always overlooked. I mean, let’s face it, working with wedding vendors who look like the models of the styled shoots doesn’t really speak “relatable” to me LOL

Some people have an advantage and some don’t, not just because of the way they look but also the way they talk. Cliques, awards, referrals and so on, some miss those just because of that. Social media didn’t make it easier for me because all I did was drink and eat…

I want to celebrate those who overcame this because I always felt like I needed to work twice, heck, thrice as hard, and that was my motivation. After years of studying the culture and the market, I know what it takes to sustain a business in an industry that, I felt, wasn’t built for me.

Again, I will discuss the typical stuff: how you can startup your wedding video business, how to get the right equipment, how to find your style and market them to the right audience AND try to give you as much information as humanly possible to get you where you need to go.

I hope you take this journey with me and HIT subscribe. Leave a review if it’s nice, or leave me alone if you have bad things to say. Watch out for the next episodes of the Wedding Video Boss till then, be nice especially if you’re good looking. Bossman out.
